History of Outback - Roberts Subaru, Downingtown

The Outback was first introduced to the U.S market in 1996 as a capable and efficient alternative to the larger truck-based SUVs. It was equipped with a 4 cylinder 'Boxer' engine and standard symmetrical all wheel drive system that remains unique to Subaru.

The second generation debuted in 2000 and as well as the trusted 4 cylinder engine, a new 3.0 liter, 6 cylinder "Boxer" engine was offered as an option together with leather interior, heated seats and the dual sunroof.

When the third generation arrived in 2005, it sported a completely re-designed body and interior and improved ground clearance to 8.5 inches, further enhancing this vehicle's 'go anywhere' style. Another new variant for 2005 was the XT model with a 250hp turbo-charged engine borrowed from the Impreza WRX. Also new was the 5 speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sportshift feature.

From 2008 model year onwards, the Outback sedan and Legacy wagons were discontinued leaving the Outback name for all wagons and Legacy for all sedan models.

The all new fourth generation Outback was launched in June 2009. Ground clearance was again increased to 8.7 inches and a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) becomes available in all 4 cylinder models. The standard transmission is now a 6 speed manual and the 6 cylinder engine's capacity is increased from 3.0 to 3.6 liters and runs on regular unleaded gas. New technology including voice activated GPS touch screen navigation system and Bluetooth wireless package are available options.

Outback is the winner of Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award for 2010.
